Labrang Monastery is located in the far northeastern corner of Tibet. It was founded in the mid-16th-century and is a major teaching center for the Yellow Hat sect of Buddhism. The surrounding territory has a mixed population of Tibetan, Han, and Hui Muslim peoples. The region has a temperate, semi-arid climate and receives a mean of 450 mm of rain per annum.
